Pink ribbons have been a symbol of breast cancer awareness. Pink, in general, has aided folks in expressing support for women with breast cancer or those who have had breast cancer — or even those affected by breast cancer. October is Breast Cancer Month.
It appears to have started in 1979 when a woman started using a ribbon when her husband was taken hostage by Iranians. About 10 years later, AIS activists used ribbons to have a symbol of awareness. It seemed like every cause had to have a ribbon and pink was considered a traditional female color and so the color pink stuck with Breast Cancer Awareness.
